The Crypt and the Scavi Beneath Saint Cecilia's Basilica
This is the crypt, built in 1899-1901, at the west end of the excavations.
Located behind an iron grille in the crypt is the 9th-century confessio containing the tombs of
the martyrs Cecilia, Valerian, Tibertius, and Maximus and the popes Urban I (222-30) and Lucius I (253-54).
This was Cecilia's home. After she died, it became a church. Later, they built the present day basilica on top of it.
The anchor was an early symbol of Christianity.
The peacock was another early symbol of Christianity.
