Vatican Museum

The Vatican Museum is spectacular by any standard and is well worth the visit. We had a tour guide with audio headsets (highly recommended!). There is so much to see that it's nearly impossible to describe to all - masterpieces of artwork, priceless paintings by Raphael and other famous artists, ornate sculptures, huge tapestries, enormous hand-painted wall maps - you name it. The architecture and decor of the rooms alone is breathtaking. We shot hundreds of photos, and once again I was forced to choose only a few for display on the webpage. The Vatican Museum is marvelous and stunning. It is truly an epic journey through the history of the Church and the world.

Although most folks refer to this area of the Vatican as "The Vatican Museum", it is really several museums in one, and it includes the Vatican Courtyards, the Sistine Chapel, the Gallery of Tapestries, the Gallery of Maps, Raphael's Rooms, the Egyptian Museum, the Etruscan Museum, the Room of The Immaculate Conception, and many other exhibits. It would take a month to see it all.

World within a world.

Many of the statues in the Vatican were actually recovered from the trash by the Church.
The Romans had carelessly tossed away this ancient statue of Emperor Augustus.
Aware of its significance as an important piece of world history, the Church recovered it and saved it.

Inside the Vatican Museum. Actually, the museum is really a group of museums - the Vatican Museums.

Note the white netting in this photo.
Portions of the artwork on the ceiling of that room had become unstable and was due for repair.
